As a teacher I have closely witnessed the revolutions and challenges the education system in India has went through. Education in India is known for its emphasis on knowledge acquisition and academic excellence. The conservative model, while successful in producing technically proficient individuals, often falls short in fostering critical thinking, creativity, and global awareness. I can confidently say that The International Learning Opportunities for Students (ILOS) program developed by ISP has an impactful contribution in bridging this gap.
Student Learning:
ILOS goes beyond traditional education to provide the students an experience of learning outside the classroom. The programme, with its nine unique modules has been designed to connect students from not just different regions, but from various cultures, strata and ethnicities. These exposures to the young minds help them to fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of global issues.
The ILOS program is designed keeping in mind the ISP Big 5 competencies, i.e. Self-Leadership, Cognitive, Interpersonal, Digital, and Global skills which are the cornerstones for thriving in this highly competitive and evolving world. By engaging in this program, students tend to find relevance in the knowledge they gather in the and apply them in real world issues. For example, the ISP Scientists program introduces students to sustainable living practices, making them aware about their responsibilities and commitment towards environmental issues. By calculating their carbon footprints and exploring sustainable fashion, students learn practical ways to lead more eco-friendly lives.
Participation in ILOS programs also inculcates leadership qualities and collaborative skills. Be it ISP Model United Nations (MUN) or the ISP Change Makers initiative, students, through these models gain valuable experience in teamwork, problem-solving, effective communication, social service and many more. These experiences not only enrich their academic journey but also prepare them for future challenges.
Teacher Development:
The ILOS program is equally transformative for teachers. As an ILOS Coordinator, I have had the privilege of guiding students through various modules and witnessing their growth firsthand. This role has required me to wear many hats, from promoting the program within the school to coordinating logistics and facilitating communication between students and international peers.
One of the most rewarding aspects of being an ILOS Coordinator is the opportunity to foster innovative thinking and global citizenship among students. By guiding them through creative activities and interactive webinars, I have seen students develop a passion for sustainability and a commitment to making a positive impact on the world. These experiences have not only enhanced my teaching skills but also deepened my understanding of global education and its importance in today’s interconnected world.
Furthermore, the ILOS program has allowed me to build valuable connections with educators and students from around the globe. These connections have enriched my professional network and provided new insights into effective teaching practices. By collaborating with international colleagues, I have gained fresh perspectives on education and developed innovative approaches to student engagement and learning.
In conclusion, the ILOS program has proven to be a very effective model in global education, and has contributed in both, student learning and teacher development. By providing students with unique learning opportunities and equipping teachers with valuable skills and experiences, ILOS provides a 360° prospect to educators and educates. As we look to the future, I am excited to see the continued impact of ILOS on our school community and beyond.
